about

Sonically, “Choice” is a blend between TrapSoul, and R&B influences, and will serve as the lead single for Zaafir’s upcoming EP Summer’s Never Over. Topically, “Choice” is a response to the recent upheaval of Roe vs. Wade by the Supreme Court; in the song, Zaafir emphasizes the necessity to support women from all walks of life now more than ever. Whether it’s struggling to cope with controlling partners or peers, societal pressures on how to dress or act, or dealing with negative stereotypes or narratives that affect confident, genuine decision-making, “Choice” is focused on uplifting all people and their personal choices, whatever those may be.

Visually, “Choice” depicts the narratives of three different women, each of whom selects an outfit they feel best represents themselves. However, as they look in the mirror, they become overwhelmed with insecurity, anxiety, and fear of judgment. Simultaneously, text message conversations appear, alluding to certain struggles each woman may be going through in their personal life: whether it’s gaslighting by friends and family, navigating an abusive relationship, or struggling with their sexuality. Each woman then frantically tries on different outfits to appease those who oppress them, only to finally find confidence in their own beauty by the video’s end. With this visual initiative, we strived to symbolize the strength and self-worth that comes from within us as human beings, regardless of what judgment or negativity may come our way.

lyrics

Aye, missed me baby so I know you came through
Hurting baby so I know you came through

Aye, got a new clutch you love to hold
Got the shoes with the bottom like a rose
With a dress that be showing off them goals
You feeling like it ain’t enough, uh
Take a minute you've been through a lot, yea, aye

With the clutch, you love to hold
Got the Shoes with the bottom like a rose
You feeling like it ain’t enough
Take a minute you've been through a lot aye, aye

You got some people tryna tell you how to move
You got another tryna tell you what to do
You got another tryna tell you what’s the rule
It’s your life girl should be up to you
Got some friends that are siding with the news
Got some men but they haven’t got a clue aye
You got a list of all the things for you to lose
Not the ones we want but still we got to choose

With words like all due with respect
When you hear those red flags just auto correct
Your feeling really anxious lately what’s coming up next
Events in the past years it's building your stress

No, the pain is not the same but I’m feeling you best
With the color of my skin, they're feeling unrest
With every wall, I seem to break they put up a fence
Then send an indirect message like kill in defense

I know that times that we’re living feels crazy.
I know it girl.
Missed me baby so I know you came through
Hurting lately so I know you came through
Lost the words to say it but I see you
Keep the values rooted
Imma stand behind you through this

Grab the new clutch you love to hold
Wear the shoes with the bottom like a rose
Wear the dress that be showing off them goals.
You feeling like it ain’t enough
Take a minute you've been through a lot.
uh
Grab the new clutch you love to hold
Wear the shoes with the bottom like a rose
You feeling that it ain’t enough, uh
Take a minute you've been through a lot
Aye, Aye
Dead them, haters, leave the comments 42
You're undefeated do you ever get it skewed
And you the sweetest, yeah you know I got the tooth.
Know your value you belong in every room

Keep it pushing on them leave them people juked
If they acting crazy go and cut them loose
And if you need some shooters know I got a few
You're a firework go ahead and light the fuse

And set it off
